Materials Engineering

Course code: 175566
Language of instruction: English
Duration of the course: 33 days (297h)
Lecturers: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karl Maile (Steinbeis Advanved Risk Technologies GmbH), Stefan Zickler (Steinbeis Advanced Risk Technologies)
Assessment: Written Exam Transfer Paper [optional topic for Project Study Paper]
Credit points: 10 CPs

Short description

The module elaborates fundamentals of Materials Science, such as a general introduction, mechanical properties and related material testing of structural metallic materials. It gives a demonstration of specific damage mechanisms (creep, fatigue, creep-fatigue, corrosion) and discusses welding of metallic materials and related problems. The module gives a demonstration of loading situation in specific power plant components and an explanation of the associated material and failure behavior. It provides a description of adequate design and monitoring methods according to standards and state of art. Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) are methodologies presented in this module and used for the logical decision-making process of analysis and definition of the equipment maintenance requirements, as well as for accident prevention. Practical examples with the state-of-the art tools will be applied by the student.

Objectives

Knowledge to be acquired in this module covers introduction in the fundamentals of material science and strength calculation to understand the formation of critical loading situation in key components in (power) plants and thus the damage mechanism oriented failure. At the end of the course students are expected to be in the position to evaluate possible damage scenarios in components on basis of general information such as operation data, material and macroscopic and microscopic damage appearance.

Target Attendees / Participants

University students of Steinbeis European Master Program in Risk Engineering and Management, and similar programs.
